För 135 år sedan pågick stora demonstrationer i Chicago för rätten till åtta timmars arbetsdag. Under en av demonstrationerna dödade poliserna en arbetare, och skadade ytterligare flera stycken. Dagen efter samlades till en stödmanifestation. Plötsligt kastade någon en bomb mot polisen och eldstrid uppstod som lämnade sju poliser och fyra arbetare döda. Kort senare arresterades åtta arbetarklassorganisatörer och dömdes till döden, utan att ens kunna kopplas till vare sig bomben eller skottlossningen. Till minne av detta, och för att hedra arbetarrörelsen, valdes sedan 1 maj som arbetarrörelsens dag.

Än idag, fortfarande 135 år senare, pågår kampen för arbetares rättigheter och frihet, för socialism, världen över, och än idag bemöts kampen allt som oftast med brutal repression.

För 105 år sedan, 1916, utbröt Påskupproret på Irland, ett uppror där bland annat ” equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens” utlovades, och fackföreningsmannen James Connolly deltog med socialistiska Irish Citizen Army. Under de kommande åren utropades även flera självstyrande arbetarråd som Monaghan-, Limerick-, Knocklong-, Waterford-, Bruree-, och Cork Harbour-sovjeterna. För 40 år sedan, 1981, gav tio irländska republikaner från IRA och INLA sina liv i en hungerstrejk som en del i kampen för ett enat och socialistisk Irland, och under årtiondena sedan the Troubles startade har mängder av modiga kämpar offrat sina liv i kampen för frihet och socialism.

Än idag pågår som sagt fortfarande kampen, än idag, som i Chicago för 135 år sedan, Dublin 105 år sedan, eller i ockuperade Ulster för 40 år sedan möts kampen också med brutal repression. Frihetskämpar trakasseras inför sina barn, i den Irländska fristaten används Special Courts för att helt utan rättssäkerhet fängsla revolutionärer baserat på indicier, och situationerna för fångarna i norra Irland är ofta under all kritik.

Men, än idag, precis som för 135 år sedan, är kampen gemensam och internationell. Vi stärks av minnena av de som gått i leden före oss, och vi står vid varandras sida i solidarisk kamp för frihet och socialism.

Till minne av de som stupat i kampen för socialism nedlade idag föreningen Irlandinformation blommor vid de monument i Stockholm och Göteborg som rests för de som stred för friheten under spanska inbördeskriget.

135 years ago, large demonstrations took place in Chicago for the right to an eight-hour working day.  During one of the demonstrations, police killed one worker and injured several others.  The next day there was a gathering for in show of support of the struggle and the victims. Suddenly someone threw a bomb at the police and a firefight broke out, which left seven policemen and four workers dead.  Shortly afterwards, eight class struggle-organizers were arrested and sentenced to death, without even being able to be connected to either the bomb or the shooting.  In memory of this, and in honor of the labor movement, May 1st was chosen as the International Workers Day.

Even today, still a 135 years later, the struggle for workers’ rights and freedom, for socialism, is going on all over the world, and even today the struggle is most often met with brutal repression.

105 years ago, in 1916, the Easter Rising in Ireland broke out, in wich among other things, ”equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens” were proclaimed, and the trade unionist James Connolly participated with the socialist Citizen Army.  In the years to come, several self-governing workers’ councils were also proclaimed, such as the Monaghan-, Limerick-, Knocklong-, Waterford-, Bruree-, and Cork Harbor Soviets.  Forty years ago, in 1981, ten Irish Republicans from the IRA and INLA gave their lives in a hunger strike as part of the struggle for a united and socialist Ireland, and in the decades since the Troubles began, scores of brave fighters have sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom and socialism.

As said, even today, the struggle is still going on, and even today, as in Chicago 135 years ago, Dublin 105 years ago, or in occupied Ulster 40 years ago, the struggle is also met with brutal repression. Political activists are harassed in front of their children, in the Irish Free State Special Courts are used to imprison revolutionaries based on hearsay and evidence without legal certainty, and the situations for political prisoners in the north of Ireland are often under all criticism.

But, even today, just as 135 years ago, the struggle is collective and international. We are strengthened by the memories of those who have walked in the ranks before us, and we stand by each other in solidarity, for freedom and socialism.

In memory of those who fell in the fight for socialism, the Ireland Information Group of Sweden today laid flowers at the monuments in Stockholm and Gothenburg that were erected for those who fought for freedom during the Spanish Civil War.
