Den 3:e maj 1921 blev sex grevskap i norra Irland en stat. ”Nordirland”. Som en del av Storbritannien men med egen regering. En protestantisk stat för ett protestantiskt folk. Inledningen visade vad som skulle följa. Pogromer härjade provinsen, katolska hem attackerades och sattes i brand, arbetare drevs från sina arbetsplatser, människor misshandlades och dödades.
Det enda unionistpartiet skulle komma att styra staten som en enpartistat i 50 år. Med en poliskår och en reservpolis beredda att gå den protestantiska statens ärenden. En lagstiftning, och en tillämpning, som liknade ett apartheid-system. Riggade valkretsar, riggade bostadstilldelning, utestängda från de större arbetsplatserna, arbetslöshet, rättslöshet, prisgivna åt den protestantiska majoritetens diktatur, exploderade staten inför kraven på medborgerliga rättigheter. Den protestantiska överhögheten hotades om befolkningen i provinsen fick samma rättigheter som resten av Storbritannien. London tog över styret 1972. En lång konflikt följde.
Att fira dessa 100 år finns ingen anledning till. Att denna bigotta, sekteristiska, våldsamma stat överhuvudtaget kom till är en skam. Att den fortfarande finns och idag backas upp av kollaborerande nationalister, är en skymf. Först den irländska republiken kan ge varje medborgare på Irland ett fritt och rättvist liv.
On May 3, 1921, the six counties in Northern Ireland became a state. ”Northern Ireland”. As part of the British Crown but with its own government. A Protestant state for a Protestant people. The introduction showed what would follow. Pogroms ravaged the province, Catholic homes were attacked and set on fire, workers were driven from their workplaces, people were beaten and killed.
The only unionist party would rule the state as a one-party state for 50 years. With a police force and a reserve police ready to go about the affairs of the Protestant state. A law, and an application, that resembled an apartheid system. Rigged constituencies, rigged housing allocations, excluded from major workplaces, unemployment, lawlessness, at the mercy of the dictatorship of the Protestant majority, the state exploded in the face of demands for civil rights. Protestant supremacy was threatened if the people of the province were given the same rights as the rest of Britain. London took over in 1972. A long conflict ensued.
There is no reason to celebrate these 100 years. That this bigoted, sectarian, violent state came into being at all is a shame. That it still exists and is today backed by collaborating nationalists is an insult. Only, the Republic of Ireland can give every citizen of Ireland a free and fair life.
