Den italienska journalisten och författarinnan Silvia Calamati har engagerat sig i och skrivit om den nordirländska konflikten under tjugo års tid.
Hon bevakade under många år konflikten för italienska tidningar, radio och tv och har i längre perioder varit bosatt i Belfast och Dublin. 1997 utkom hon med boken ”Irlanda del Nord. Una colonia in Europa” och har även översatt Bobby Sands ”One day in my life” till italienska.
Under 1990 talet intervjuade hon ett antal republikanska kvinnor, alla med en stark historia att berätta. Dessa sammanställdes till boken ”Women´s Stories from the North of Ireland” som utkom på Beyond The Pale Publications 2002. Samma år belönades Silvia och boken med Tom Cox Award i Belfast.
I boken intervjuas 21 mer eller mindre kända republikanska kvinnor med starka levnadsöden. Många av historierna kretsar kring plastkulor, arbetslöshet, fängelser, förtryck, våld och död. Boken andas av förtvivlan, smärta och sorg men samtidigt av en stark vilja att förändra samhället och att inte ge upp för förtrycket. Människorättsadvokaten Rosmary Nelson intervjuas om hur det är att leva under dödshot från RUC och lojalister. Allvaret i hennes ord visade sig tydligt då hon mördades av en lojalistgrupp sex månader efter intervjuen. Róisín McAliskey berättar om sin tid i fängelse, om hur tankarna tillslut är det enda som de inte lyckas komma åt och om hur viktigt det är att få ett yttre stöd som politisk fånge. Bernadette Sands berättar om sin uppväxt och sin bror Bobby som dog som martyr i hungerstrejken 1981. Om hur de som barn tvingades flytta från område till område för att slippa trakasserier, hot och våld.

The book interviews 21 more or less well-known Republican women with strong fatalities. Many of the stories revolve around plastic bullets, unemployment, prisons, oppression, violence and death. The book breathes with despair, pain and sorrow, but at the same time with a strong will to change society and not give up on oppression. Human rights lawyer Rosmary Nelson is interviewed about what it is like to live under the threat of death from RUC and loyalists. The seriousness of her words was evident when she was murdered by a loyalist group six months after the interview. Róisín McAliskey talks about his time in prison, about how the thoughts end up being the only thing they fail to access and about how important it is to get external support as a political prisoner. Bernadette Sands talks about her upbringing and her brother Bobby who died as a martyr in the hunger strike in 1981. About how, as children, they were forced to move from one area to another in order to avoid harassment, threats and violence.
